Headaches & Migraines

  • November 17, 2020

Rarely a week goes by that someone doesn’t mention a headache and migraine in my treatment room. They are often astonished to hear that it’s something we treat all the time! Many people feel their headaches are just what everyone gets or that their migraines are un-treatable, due to some kind of food sensitivity or hormonal issue. Often this is not the case and they can be treated.

Did you know?

  • Migraine is the third most common disease in the world with an estimated global prevalence of 14.7% (around 1 in 7 people).
  • Research suggests that 3,000 migraine attacks occur every day for each million of the general population. This equates to over 190,000 migraine attacks every day in the UK.
  • Patient satisfaction for migraine treatment is less than 50%. The majority self-medicate using over-the-counter medication and don’t seek medical help.

Migraines and headaches frequently go hand in hand with

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Jaw problems
  • Dizziness
  • Tinnitus
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach and digestive issues
  • Anxiety disorders.

Migraines associated with certain foods or hormone changes are treatable

Neck issues can cause sensitisation in parts of the brain. Serotonin (in the brain) can change with normal hormonal changes and if there is a sensitisation on the nervous system, hormone changes can cause a migraine. You can reduce the sensitivity by addressing the neck issue, meaning that normal hormonal fluctuations won’t trigger a migraine or headache.

Headaches can be due to pain from joints in the spine, muscles in the neck and shoulders, scalp muscles, jaw alignment and much more. A holistic assessment is necessary as there can be anxiety caused tension, postural issues, biomechanical issues – even stiff toes can throw out bio-mechanics and cause headaches.

Experienced physiotherapists can also decipher if it’s an internal health issue and if a referral to a neurologist or GP is required.

What may surprise you is that physiotherapists, with specific training, can assess internal organ mobility and treat you accordingly. At our practice, we also have the NES (Nutri-Energetic Screening) system at our disposal. This enables us to evaluate general health issues too.

What if you could be rid of them and perhaps other issues? and it was as simple as receiving good specialist care, in the form of physiotherapy? We have people who kick themselves for putting up with the pain for so long, not realising that they could be helped.

If you or someone you care about suffers headaches and migraines – even tummy migraines in children – give us a call. Book in to see if we can alleviate your suffering – once and for all!
